Andrew wanted a list of things broken about disconnected operation.
Here are my notes. The first and fourth of these show up as action
items on our status reports each month.
* Right now, nothing in the user dotfiles runs athneteventd. The
most important impact of this oversight is that disconnecting and
reconnecting causes your zephyr subs to be lost.
* DNS does not time out quickly. We can try to hack BIND to notice
ICMP errors and time out fast, or we can frob resolv.conf when the
network is disconnected.
* I'm not sure how users should create local accounts for
themselves. The default Athena dotfiles may try to do
inappropriate things like "olc ping" and "from".
* Right now we rely on dhcp to determine when an interface is up,
and there is no user tool to say "I'm off the net" or "I'm about
to go off the net" or "I'd like to switch from wired to wireless"
or anything like that.
