Hi,
I'm afraid you don't provide sufficient data to debug why your
update failed; if you attempted to update directly from 8.4 to 9.1
without first updating to 9.0, that could leave your machine in an
unbootable state.
Why the reinstall worked but left you with a system missing many
files is easy to explain, however. The hostname you installed as does
not have Sun hesiod information, and as a result, the machine is not
attaching system packs. Could you let us know the hostname of the
machine in question? We should be able to add hesiod information for it
to correct the problem.
