I've verified that the ramdisk methodology works where the other fails.
(And even works if there's a hung umount from the other failing.)

I also have a fairly degenerate case for reproducing it that has worked
on every athena linux box I've tried it on:

1) boot with a clear AFS cache
2) cat <2MB file in AFS> > /dev/null
3) run mkinitrd

I haven't found any other kind of network traffic that causes the
problem.
