Those "devices" are really just named pipes. If the software comes
from sources, it should be possible to look elsewhere, like /tmp, for
the named pipes. If you're sufficiently brave, you should be able to
patch the binary to look in /tmp, since dev and tmp both have three
letters.
This would work immediately, and require no athena release change.
