A course 12 TA wants to use a piece of software that requires some new
devices in /dev. (This software "iraf" has been around for years -- Joe
Harrington configured it for the DECstation and RS/6000 a long time ago.
I think they just hacked workstations to make it run. Now they want to
install the Sun version.)

I need to figure out the realm of possibilities for making the
modifications for public Suns. Obviously they can change any private
workstations, and we could probably manage the Suns in the electronic
classroom. Beyond that, is this something which could be put into a
patch somehow? Or could we write a, gulp, setuid script? Or turn our
backs and let students become root, make the devices, and run the
software each time they sit down?

Here's what they want to do:

 cd /dev
 /etc/mknod imt1i p
 /etc/mknod imt1o p
 ln -s imt1o imt1
 chmod 777 imt1*

Thanks,

	Dot
