Yes, long-standing bug, I think. I think dm manages to abort instead of
noticing the X failure and putting up a console login.

I think we should punt on documenting this until I implement my Clever
Idea which will make it a simple rc.conf tweak. (The Clever Idea is to
introduce a "vcgetty" script which either execs mingetty, or displays a
go-away message, depending on what's in rc.conf.)

This will tell you what actions would be performed to bring your
workstation back to the normal set of RPMs:
/etc/athena/rpmupdate -np /dev/null /var/athena/release-rpms
However, if you run this as root and drop the -n, then it actually goes
ahead and makes those changes. So we might want to make a front-end
script for this instead of documenting the magic command. I can't think
of a good name for the script, though.

To clarify, just plain "update_ws" will work on all platforms, these
days, as long as you did a console login as root like you're supposed
to.
