One of the HP's in DSpace was upgraded to 9.0 with little problem even
after it had extensive software layered in.

Good job everyone!

Subject: new athena release

A quick report on my experience with updating athena to 9.0 (manually...
m10-423-2 is a private workstation with AUTOUPDATE=false): it went great,
but not until I removed my locally installed rpms of postgresql and samba.
I think each had openssh/ssl dependencies that update_ws coughed up on...
according to update_ws -n the libraries those rpms provide were to be
first deleted, then installed as new versions (rather than simply upgraded
in place). Certainly there must be good reasons to do it like that -- the
sheer volume of packages being upgraded was quite great, with loads of
athena-specific builds mixed in.

Since they're rpms, though, and only installed locally for devel purposes,
they're easy enough to put back in.

All in all for someone new to MIT it's pretty damned amazing how well this
stuff is managed. You shoulda seen how big a hassle it was at yale just
to upgrade from meeting maker 4 to 6. :)
