I don't think you should expect any problems with the new release.
The only issue is that your machine might only be capable of an 8-bit
color depth, and the new GNOME environment tends to eat up all of the
256 colors such a machine can display at once, and then new programs
can't allocate colors.  Some programs will compensate by using a
private colormap, meaning that the colormap will change when that
program's window has the focus.  This is usually no more than an
annoyance, but it's something to know about.

To see if you'll have this problem, you can run (under the old or the
new release):

	xdpyinfo | grep 'depth of root'

If it says "24 planes," you should be home free.  If it says "8
planes," then you'll have the 8-bit color problem.  If you find that
too annoying, you can disable the new interface (on a per-user basis)
by selecting "Settings -> Revert to Dash" from the foot menu.
