Ted:

As per our hallway chat. Here is a note outlining my concern, and my
current plan of attack.

My team is investigating deployment of Red Hat Linux version 7.1 with
the 2.4 kernel this July school-wide. Unfortunately, there is no IBM
port of AFS for the Linux 2.4 kernel. Apparently there is something
available from Open AFS that may work.

If we decide to deploy Open AFS for Athena under Linux, we are
essentially promising 10,000 users with 1000 machines that services that
they lean very heavily upon will continue to be rock solid.

When we have gone MIT-wide with AFS from Transarc in the past, what we
shipped out had been extensively tested by Transarc with procedures that
included significant regression tests. (Even then, we would find a few
little bugs every so often because of the scale of our AFS use.) As far
as I know, Open AFS does not have Transarc's test facilities.

My current plan is to NOT deploy Open AFS in the absense of robust test data.

What projects are currently under way in Open AFS for regression testing?
How can my team help?

-wdc
