Hello,

I'm working with davek@mitvma to install an update to the ADSM backup
system on Athena (it's actually called, TSM, Tivoli Storage Manager, now).
One new feature we'd much like to be able to offer is scheduled backups,
which we didn't have before.

To do this users need to leave a daemon running as root on the machine
to be backed up, the dsmc command-line backup client. This daemon in turn
needs to communicate through an suid root binary, dsmtca (we've actually
been using dsmtca already in the current ADSM release on Athena- it's
needed for non-scheduled backups too).

If there is any reason for us not to proceed (security or otherwise) please
let me know. I'm planning to make a tar archive of all the files needed
to run the daemon locally, and to instruct users to untar this as root
from / to install the files. I'm expecting to put them below /var/local/tsm
(except for the ones that need to go below /etc/rc.d/init.d or /etc/init.d).

                                            Alex
