If you use mkserv, all this extra stuff gets copied into /var.

While we do sometimes put free space checks in the update script when
we add a lot of disk usage in an update, it is not really kosher to
have non-Athena stuff in the usr partition of an Athena machine. Your
/usr/local should be a symlink into /var.
