I believe we've figured out the problem. IRIX is making a call into
filesystem-dependent code, which may not be implemented; if not, a
specific error code is expected back, in which case it falls back to
a different call. The call is apparently not implemented in our version
of AFS, but a different error code is returned, causing the IRIX routine
to error out. A comment in the AFS source indicates this is intentional,
because they do not want the fallback function to be called.
It is not immediately obvious how to fix this. I can provide more details
to anyone interested.
