This is a reminder that the Athena 8.3 release is scheduled to go into
public use starting tonight. We are going to do the public release
over several days to spread out the network bandwidth used by updating
machines. The current schedule is:
Sun update: Monday night/Tuesday morning
Indy update: Tuesday night/Wednesday morning
O2 update: Wednesday night/Thursday morning
We plan to do early Hesiod propagations for some of the updates
(particular the Indy one) so that most machines will finish updating
before the next morning.
There are a lot of new things in the Athena 8.3 release, although most
of them are fairly subtle. Some notable new features include:
* SGI machines will be updated from IRIX 6.2/6.3 to IRIX 6.5.
* emacs has been updated to 20.3.
* The MH mail suite has been replaced with nmh, a heavily
updated version. There are some small behavior differences.
* We have added support for reading of MIME attachments in
mail messages.
* Our printing software has been replaced with lprng.
* We have added a new supported screensaver installed as xss.
(Users familiar with the SIPB xscreensaver should run
"xss-button".)
There are also some upgrades to third-party software which will happen
close to the time of the public release:
* Netscape 4.6.1
* Maple Version V Release 5.1
* MATLAB 5.3
* Framemaker 5.5.6
* Tecplot 7.5

through "help".
