In fact, 8.2.19 tracked the kernel directories (to update the afb and
m64 drivers)--not exactly the same thing as "tried to install a new
kernel", but probably equivalent enough for our purposes--so there's
some likelihood that this did happen. But I'd prefer to deal in terms
of facts rather than speculation.
(Whether tracking the kernel directories had anything to do with the
machines dying remains an open question. It probably didn't, unless
the machines had local kernel changes, but since I have almost zero
data here, I can't say anything for sure.)
