I'm afraid it's worse than that.
"Xsun -dev /dev/fb defdepth 24" is not a command that you run to tweak
some configuration thing like afbconfig or ffbconfig. It's how you
start the X server (and there are a pile of other options, too).
So you have to tweak /etc/athena/login/config to add "-dev /dev/fb
defdepth 24" to the X startup options. But on a public machine, that
change will get reverted at the next reactivate or reboot. (On a
private machine, at the next update.)
It may be that afbconfig -deflinear is an easier command to recommend,
even if it's not as correct.
