1. 8.3 status -- tree builds on solaris; does not build on SGI because it
requires Irix 6.5. Bob and Greg will coordinate. Still needs attach.tab
conversion, xscreensaver, quota. Still some consideration of how to handle
multilingual Emacs fonts (mostly requires more srvd space). We are on
schedule.
Discussion indicates that we may want to plan ahead for possible OS patches
on solaris. Since 8.2 and 8.3 use the same OS version, some thought will be
required to extend the naming convention.
2. 8.2.19 is in the dev cell. Should go to Athena next week. Includes
openGL fixes for m64 and ffb. Abby will help Alex to test. (Also agenda
item No. 5)
3. Fortran man pages. On the SGI, man function will usually show fortran
man pages before showing C pages. Bob will check whether we can change the
order easily.
6. Desktops. Some early investigation of gnome and kde (graphical
desktops). While we may make some experimental results available in
lockers, this is not expected to be a near-term concern of the release.
7. Ultra load workaround. The dial-ups have seen a problem under heavy
load, and are applying a workaround provided by Sun.
8. Completed.
4. Vendors snafu. Sun has had trouble with xrdb bug report. We are still
looking to test the flash prom upgrade for enterprise 450. Still having
trouble talking about booting.
SGI has a proprietary naming system (nsd) layered on NFS. Recently we have
discovered that this system produces error messages even though we do not
use it, and SGI seems to consider turning off the irrelevant messages as a
enhancement. We are also having difficulty obtaining 6.5 source.
9. There has been some examination of updating xlogin for a more modern
appearance. However, changes to this code base may be quite difficult.
