It'd be nice to know if the Ultra 5 has the same misbehavior running
8.2.17. (It's possible that it was running 8.2.17 already, but not
guaranteed.)

There have been five revs of the m64 patch for Solaris 2.6 since the
version we have in 8.2.17 (we have 105362-13; latest is 105362-18).
Rev 18 was released five days ago and had fixes for window system
hangs introduced in rev 17. It would be nice if they could come out
with a driver which actually works.

I expect some machines will inevitably not get reset. This could
cause problems, although there's a decent chance nobody would notice.
I'm not the one who's likely to have to deal with the problems,
though, so it's not an objection from me.

Unfortunately, the more I think about this the more I'm afraid of it.
We need to extend the model for xlogin to handle a couple of new
things (configuration changes which take effect for one X server
session, stuff which depends on hardware model rather than platform).
Recall that xlogin is the program which calls reactivate which makes
workstations take a release. If we break it, even in certain subtle
ways, we have a serious problem.

Don't the ultra 5s have a power switch in back, in addition to a power
button on the front? Not much better than pulling the plug, but maybe
easier for him to get at.
