Okay, from the Sun documentation and my testing, if you log in as root
and run:
m64config -depth 24 -res 1152x900x66
then the machine should start running in 24-bit color from then on
(starting from the next X server restart). The configuration change
seems to survive a reboot, but I have no idea where the state is
stored.
