1. Bill started the meeting off with the recommendation that we exterminate
with prejudice the SGI engineers. I think this was in relation to the
proposal from their custom engineering group that for a mere $60,000 or so,
they would work with us to develop a program that combines inst databases
and does other magic desirable for our environment, all in just 12 weeks.
If we supply a summer intern, they can cut the price in half!
We have not accepted their offer.
2. In IRIX 6.5, the unified name service causes problems by caching the
password name space. Bob has a work around consisting of flushing the cache.
Much groaning was heard.
3. Heather has Teresa Lai (tlai) helping with the Private Workstation
Owner's Guide for SGI. They are also looking at doing sections on knfs and
support for local printer (inkjet type).
Much cheering was heard.
4. 8.2.16 should go to the Athena cell next week. There should be a
warning to CFYI that if a workstation does not take the update, linking a
program (on SGI?) will fail. The solution is to take the update or at least
move to a workstation that has taken the update.
5. Linux news: early experimentation with the Transarc AFS client reports
that it is "better" then the SIPB client. There is also a potential for
confusion because the SIPB client was numbered 2 and 3, while the Transarc
client is numbered 2.2.
Bill says Thomas Bushnell is going to be the Linux expert doing the Athena
Port.
6. Sun has sent a patch CD-ROM for the prom fix for ultras, etc. They are
also working to make the longform interface for booting and other parts a
standard part of their system (via an enhancement request).
