Release 8.2.8 was released for general use this morning at 2 A.M.
We would normally expect most of the machines to have completed
their update by early this morning.
Unfortunately, as was visible in many locations, the update did not
complete on many machines until much later.
Our analysis of the problem indicates that this was due to overloading the
connections to the OS servers (we had four sites for the OS volumes, the
same as in previous releases, which were spread over several locations. The
loading this time appears to have been beyond that expected.)
We are continuing to analyze the problem and will be investigating ways to
avoid or reduce the likelihood of such a problem in the future.
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any way to alleviate the
difficulty right now.
We recommend that people allow the updates in progress to complete. We
expect that most systems will finish the update soon.
