The current plan on is that on Tuesday morning your beta machines
should tell you about the 8.2 release. This message contains
instructions on taking the beta as well as a brief summary of new
features.

An important caveat: one of the potential dangers from taking this
update on a Sun is having your disk fill because of expanding disk
usage on the root and usr partitions. If this happens, your machine
will probably have to be reinstalled. Theoretically update_ws has a
space check to make this situation unlikely, but it hasn't been 100%
over the course of the alpha period. I will be working on this
problem to try to eliminate it before early test. At any rate: check
your root and /usr partitions (with "df -k"); if they have less than
6-8MB free, then back up any important information before taking the
update or wait for more information about the problem (contact me or
watch mail to release-team).

Okay, the instructions:

	* Use ^P at the xlogin window to request a console login, and
	  log in as root.

	* Run:

		detach -a

	* Attach the new system packs, depending on your platform:

	  Sun:	attach -O dev-sun4sys-82
	  Indy:	attach -O dev-sgi62sys-82
	  O2:	attach -O dev-sgi63sys-82

	* Run:

		/srvd/update_ws

	* If the system is an O2, run "reboot" after the update is
complete (there is no reboot during the update since the OS
is not being upgraded). On other systems you will have a
chance to inspect the system before the final reboot, but
there are instructions so it's obvious what you're supposed
	  to do.

Bug reports about the new release should go to testers@mit.edu.
Questions should go to release-team@mit.edu.

Draft system release notes for 8.2 are in
/afs/dev.mit.edu/project/relnotes/rel82.tex. A brief summary of new
features:

	* /usr/athena/bin/perl is now perl 5.
	* The Kerberos 5 source base has replaced CNS Kerberos 4,
leading to many new features and some interface changes.
	* The login system has been revamped and should behave more
	  reliably.
	* You may optionally control access and specify local accounts
with the /etc/athena/access file instead of with
	  /etc/nocreate and /etc/noremote.
	* SSH is in the release (client and server); "mkserv remote"
machines will enable ssh access automatically. The server
	  performs Athenized logins.
	* "mkserv remote" allows a configuration where users can turn
off remote access. (It's not the default.)
	* There is a new add implementation, which can locate binary
directories for old architectures via ATHENA_SYS_COMPAT.
	* /usr/athena/bin/passwd is now a real command, which can
update local password entries for users. In particular,
root can just run "passwd" to change root's password and
	  update the appropriate .local file.
	* Most (hopefully all) of the assumptions about Athena
machines being on MITnet have been removed.
	* Athena machines now run xntpd for time synchronization. AFS
and gettime synchronization are still active, but have a
granularity (two seconds for AFS, sixty seconds for gettime)
	  which shouldn't interfere with xntpd.
	* Athena machines now run BIND 8.
	* Kermit 6.0 is now part of the release instead of an
	  attach-and-add script.
	* There have been minor improvements to discuss.
	* There have been upgrades to ispell, sysinfo, and x3270.
	* There has been a big source upgrade to zephyr, but not a
	  whole lot of user-visible changes.

and a whole bunch more little things.
