PHONE NUMBER: 617-253-0140
HOST SYSTEM TYPE: SPARC-4
OS RELEASE: Solaris 2.5.1
SEVERITY CODE: 1 - Urgent
Product Area: SYSNA
PRODUCT: Solaris OS
Product Release: 2.5.1
SUMMARY: L1-A fails to restart hung Sparc 4 under 2.5.1. Fine under 2.4
DETAILED DESCRIPTION: follows...
Since upgrading site-wide to Solaris 2.5.1, MIT Athena
has been noticing sporadic hangups of just Sparc 4 hardware.
Bit for bit (centrally maintained so we GUARANTEE this is)
identical distributions work just fine on our Classic, and
Sparc 5 platforms. But we walk up to a few Sparc 4's
and they are hung. L1-A will not restart. Power cycling
is required.
Some Sparc 4's never hang.
Some hang a lot more often.
We have not yet figured out what to do to make the hang
happen on command. Sometimes someone doing a lot of work
will get a hang. Sometimes, an idle machine will hang.
Reinstalling the Athena software release does not help.
Updating to the latest revisions of the recommended patches
does not help.
Reinstalling the PREVIOUS Athena software release built on
Solaris 2.4 and the hang behavior goes AWAY.
Has anyone seen this problem before?
My customers (excitable MIT professors) are CONCERNED!
