Project Name: 5ESS upgrade and replacement
Project Leader: Lu Keohane
Report Date November 8, 2002
Submitted by: Lu Keohane/Joan Cyr
Project Notebook URL: http://web.mit.edu/is/delivery/5ess/

Accomplishments in October 2002:
Lucent completed working on the lists of anomalies identified in the
walk-through (e.g. alarms are all now working correctly; test and monitor
phones have been installed and are functioning normally, etc.);

Continued to update ICE9 database with information gathered as a result of
the Frame Verification (57,000 cable pairs terminating within the 3
switchrooms; this will continue beyond the end of this Delivery project;

Began the reconstruction of the NW12 switchroom; returned the borrowed
space to Nuclear Engineering group;

Continued negotiations around final payments for Lucent Integration travel
and living expenses, and transportation costs;
Next Month's plan:

Revisit the redesign and construction plans for the E19's switchroom, (e.g.
this includes the surrounding offices and equipment that had been moved
prior to the start of this project. This will include the addition of 4
new staff members and possibly 4 new contracted members). This redesign
process will occur in conjunction with Christine Cavanna (I/S Space
Planning) and encompass all TNS staff in E19.

Begin the planning process for the training for the Operations team and
technician. (e.g. 5E architecture, maintenance, translations, DDM 2000 and
other newly installed equipment).

Issues:

Having to keep Lucent abreast of all outstanding items on the list created
during the project and especially during the walk through. Had to direct
them as to how the talk and monitor phones should work, and escalating the
process up Lucent's technical hierarchy;

Key Learnings:

In the month of October, we learned about this great time-out in the middle
of the day called the lunch hour. It's when you stop working at noon-ish
and eat food in a civilized manner. A truly wonderful discovery after a
very long 4 year process called the 5ESS Upgrade and Replacement
Project.      ;o)
