Last time I tried installing Dropbox on a cluster machine (about a year
ago), I was able to do so. You have sudo/gksudo permissions, so I'm a bit
unclear what you mean by 'restricted access'. The one catch is that the
Nautilus (file manager) integration requires you to log out and log in,
which would clean up the installed Dropbox package, but you can work
around this by killing and restarting Nautilus from a terminal.
I might try installing a newer version of Dropbox and seeing if there's a
way to make the installer work more cleanly. But hopefully this
information gets you started.
