This is Launchpad bug #554172, it seems, where something about the kernel
causes issues with being able to open /dev/console, and a recent Upstart
update should work around this by falling back to /dev/null if
/dev/console doesn't exist. We'll see if this works. I also suspect that
this only affects serverish machines, but I haven't read closely.
There are a lot of angry people misunderstanding PC-losering and flaming
Canonical for having buggy software in an LTS at
