Ok, thanks for letting us know. Is there any chance that there's a
connection between visiting specific sites and experiencing those
freezes? (Maybe they only happen after you visit a particular site?)
We know that the performance of Firefox 3.0 when running out of AFS
(the networked filesystem that Athena uses) is particularly bad. I
could be wrong, but it sounds like you may just be being affected by
that.
We think we have a reasonably good understanding of why the
performance is so bad, and we've done some preliminary investigations
into ways to mitigate the performance cost. However, in the last few
weeks our efforts have been focused primarily on developing and
testing some major changes to the login process that we hope will
substantially improve login time on cluster machines.
Once that's done, improving the performance of Firefox is definitely
high on our list.
