I searched www.launchpad.net for [openoffice ubuntu], and got the
following bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/267376

OpenOffice 3.0.1, due to release "mid-January", will be in
intrepid-backports. Should we decide we don't want to wait, 3.0.0-6 is in
a PPA (personal package archive) maintained by two Canonical employees
working on OpenOffice packaging. I assume you could just copy their
packages unmodified into our apt repo, and add openoffice.org (>= 3.0) as
a dependency of debathena-thirdparty-something.

On a complete tangent, out of curiosity, do you have stats on the number
of users who use -ver flags?
