Executive Summary
<><><><><><><><><>
* The OSF has made extraordinary progress towards
restructuring for 1995 and towards formulation of PST
projects aimed at widening the focus and capabilities
for open system technologies. The Architecture Planning
Council (APC) held its first session to commence effort
to produce the Open Computing Infrastructure document.
New organizational group charters, task and personnel
assignments have been completed to align with OSF's
mission objectives. And, all this has been accomplished
with no impact on existing commitments for delivery of
OSF/1, DME NMO, OSF/Motif and DCE releases scheduled
through the second half of 1994.
* At Xhibition, on June 21, 1994, OSF announced the
general availability of OSF/Motif Release 2.0. This
latest release features an extensive set of improvements
and powerful enhancements to augment the developer's
toolkit and further simplify application development.
Several new flexible pricing options for Motif 2.0 are
available to facilitate adoption of Motif into high
volume, low end platforms.
* Ted Hanss, Chair of the OSF End User Forum Steering
Committee, was quite busy this month with his trip to
Japan. He met with steering committee members from
Japanese companies such as: Nippon Steel, Nippon
Telephone and Telegraph and SECOM. Ted also spoke at an
end user lunch function, and participated in OSF Japan's
day-long seminar "The New OSF: Realizing the Global
Information Infrastructure". Please refer to the End
User Forum Activity section for additional details on
the Japanese Symposium and CDE/Motif Project Steering
Committee End User representative needs.
* OSF announces plans for a second I-FEST event for
this year at OSF from October 17-28. In addition to
testing and verifying the interoperability of your DCE
implementation, companies can also participate in the
OSF DCE certification program. If you missed the April
event earlier this year, this will be your chance to
certify your DCE Secure Core implementation. OSF will
also be certifying the DFS and GDS components of DCE
during this Fall event.
* The OSF DCE Developers Conference in Boston, MA on
August 29-31 will address the needs of developers of
DCE. The conference includes guest speakers, special
one-day seminars and a solutions showcase which features
hands-on demonstrations of DCE-based products. For
additional information, refer to the DCE technology news
nuggets section.
* The Release Notes and Application Developer's Guide
for the DME NMO will be available mid-August. The price
for both is $30 plus shipping.
* The Research Institute is beginning a year-long
project to investigate the application of OSF DCE
technology to the World Wide Web (WWW). A major goal is
to create a secure Web implementation based on DCE
security services. In particular, the DCE
authentication and authorization mechanisms will be
employed to provide fine-grained access control for
hypertext documents. This will make the World Wide Web
a practical means to share and distribute documents in
security-conscious environments.

OSF Unveils OSF/Motif 2.0 --
New Release Offers Richest Feature Set Since Initial
Motif Introduction
SAN JOSE, CA June 21, 1994 -- The Open Software
Foundation today announced the general availability of
Release 2.0 of the OSF/Motif graphical user interface.
This release offers the most extensive feature set since
Motif 1.0 was introduced five years ago and brings
together the most-requested features from applications
developers with ease of use features to benefit end
users. OSF also announced several new flexible pricing
options for Motif 2.0 to facilitate adoption of Motif
into high volume, low end platforms.
"In the five years since its appearance in the industry,
OSF/Motif has become the dominant graphical user
interface, as well as the formal IEEE de jure standard
for open systems," said Darrell Crow, Motif Technology
Manager. "Release 2.0 continues Motif's standards
conformance by converging with the new Common Desktop
Environment (CDE) emerging standard. However, the Motif
2.0 release also retains backward compatibility with
prior Motif release 1.2 to protect software vendors' and
end users' application development investments."
This latest release of the Motif technology features an
extensive set of improvements and powerful enhancements
to augment the developer's toolkit and further simplify
application development. New toolkit features include
menu system improvements, 64-bit architectures, a
simplified data transfer model, expanded
internationalization support, and User Interface
Language (UIL) support for the new extensibility
framework also included in this release. The
extensibility framework makes it easier for developers
to extend the toolkit with customized graphical tools
(widgets) that can be re-used in building applications.
Also included in the Motif 2.0 release is an enhanced
desktop infrastructure that provides virtual screen
support and workspace management functionality.
New pricing was announced for OSF/Motif 2.0 which
includes several cost-saving royalty options that allow
developers to customize OSF/Motif for their particular
needs. Pricing options now include a Developer's Rights
Source license, which allows a licensee to ship an
OSF/Motif Executive Object Code of only libXm or libMrm
in shared library or DLL form. A floating OSF/Motif
license was also announced that allows users on a
network to "float" or temporarily transfer a copy of
Motif from one user to another with only one user having
access to that copy of Motif at any given time.
Additional options include reduced royalty pricing for
Motif shipped on either single user systems or embedded
systems, a new lower price for Motif Window Manager
(mwm) for single user systems, as well as low-cost
upgrades from Motif 1.2 source and object code licenses.
Discount schedules are available for both OSF/Motif and
OSF/Motif Executives. Please refer to the Motif
technology news nuggets section for a summary of
OSF/Motif pricing.
OSF/Motif 2.0 Release Features
Extensibility Framework
OSF has developed an extensibility framework that
significantly reduces the complexity for widget
developers and applications programmers in creating
custom widgets for their applications. This
extensibility framework includes a new mechanism, called
Traits, which implements a behavior in one widget that
can be shared by several different widgets without
requiring any particular hierarchical relationship
between those widgets. The framework also includes a new
set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
documentation to help widget writers in the layout and
management of widgets. To increase the object
orientation of Motif, this release also includes a set
of C++ based sub-classes. Documentation explaining
Motif's class methods, Traits, and Xme functions are
included in a new book, The OSF/Motif Widget Writer's
Guide, which provides numerous code samples of sub-
classing, sample widgets and a tutorial to assist
application developers in creating their own widgets.
Common Desktop Environment (CDE) Convergence
OSF/Motif 1.2 introduced major new features such as
internationalization, drag-and drop, and tear-off menus.
Those features were intended to allow application
developers to produce interoperable, easy to use
applications for a worldwide market. As a result, this
technology was selected to become the basis of the
Common Desktop Environment which is offered to X/Open
for standardization. The GUI extensions added during the
CDE specification process have been integrated with
OSF/Motif 2.0.
Desktop Infrastructure
The features most visible to the desktop user in Motif
2.0 are protocols for virtual screens and workspace
management. Virtual screen management support provides
the user with the ability to create a virtual screen
which may be much larger than the actual screen. Users
may then place application windows anywhere on that
virtual screen and move undesired windows off the
display screen or return desired windows. This allows
many more windows to be opened without cluttering the
user's screen. Workspace management allows the user to
gather semantically related applications in one place,
called a workspace. The user can then move back and
forth between workspaces without the need to have all
application simultaneously visible on the screen, but
only those applications belonging to the current
workspace.
PC Consistency
Motif 2.0 continues the convergence work with PC styles
Windows and CUA that was begun in Motif 1.2. This
includes improvements and completion's to the toolkit as
well as the addition of seven new widgets, (Container,
Notebook, Icon Gadget, Spinbox, Combobox, CSText, and
Thermometer). A new Style Guide has been developed to
ensure the convergence of the Windows, CUA, CDE, and
Motif styles, both in technology and terminology, into a
single document. This work will also be submitted to the
X/Open Fast Track process for incorporation into the
X/Open set of specifications.

End User Forum Activity
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
End User Activities in Japan & CDE/Motif End User
Representative
End user activities in Japan were the major focus for
June. Ted Hanss, Chair of the OSF End User Forum
Steering Committee, met with steering committee members
from Japanese companies, spoke at an end user lunch
function, and participated in OSF Japan's day-long
seminar "The New OSF: Realizing the Global Information
Infrastructure".
The End User Steering Committee members from Japan come
from Nippon Steel, Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, and
SECOM (Japan's largest security services firm). The
global steering committee, primarily through these
companies, will work with the OSF Japan office to
coordinate regional end user activities. We will
distribute more information on those activities over the
coming months.
The day-long seminar had over 250 attendees. In addition
to updates from OSF, and Ted's talk on the strategic
benefit of DCE and the role of the mainframe in a DCE
environment, there was a case study from a major DCE
deployment at the insurance company Tokio Marine. A
technology demonstration showed DCE running across a
multi-vendor environment. (A good test of
interoperability, the DCE cell used by all the vendors
took only ten minutes to configure!)
In the new OSF development model, there is a project
steering committee for each OSF technology. The DCE
steering committee includes end user representatives
from 3M and GM/EDS. We are now actively seeking an end
user representative for the Common Desktop
Environment/Motif committee. Involvement will require
weekly conference calls and occasional travel. This
person will work with the End User Steering Committee in
order to provide a representative view of end user
business and technical requirements. This individual
will play a key role in reflecting a user perspective to
the authoring group of sponsors during their data
gathering. Please indicate your interest in the Project
Steering Committee role by sending email to
ted@umich.edu.
Any comments or questions on End User Forum activities
should be directed to Ted Hanss, Chair, End User Forum
Steering Committee at ted@umich.edu (phone: +1-313-763-
6185, FAX: +1-313-763-4434).
Reminder: Please register your email address with Jane
Smeloff (jane@osf.org) in order to get mailings to the
end user membership. We want to get that mailing list to
a critical mass so we can begin to use it more
effectively.

Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
DCE User Groups
As DCE deployment increases, a number of user groups are
emerging to provide an interactive forum for discussing
DCE. On June 30, the Washington Area Distributed
Computing Users Group had an excellent meeting. Here is
a report from John Hosie, IBM:
There were presentations from several customers
currently implementing DCE prototypes and production
applications in the Washington area. These included
Northrup-Grumman, the National Institutes of Health, the
National Security Agency, and Hughes Applied Information
Systems. It was a very worthwhile two hours, and the
four presentations covered totally different application
environments, each with its own challenges that have
been or are being overcome.
IBM has volunteered to host the next WADCUG meeting, at
the Mid-Atlantic Technology Center in Falls Church, VA,
and it was requested that we have presentations on tools
available in the DCE environment for development and
maintenance of DCE cells. This includes everything from
GUI interface tools, to code generators, to system
administration toolkits.
Tool vendors wanting to do a half-hour presentation and,
possibly, demonstration please contact John
(hosie@VNET.IBM.COM) so that he can build an agenda for
distribution. Development tools are especially
important. Thank you.

DCE in the News
"[Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory] selected DCE
at the end of 1993 because of its portability and status
as an emerging industry standard."
- Dick Watson, Project Coordinator, Lawrence
Livermore Labs, Software Magazine, July 1994
"[IBM] is developing DCE extensions to Novell's NetWare
3 and 4 local-area net operating systems and Lotus'
Notes groupware product."
"IBM is on target to deliver DCE components across
all of its hardware platforms."
- Art Olbert, Director of IBM LAN Systems,
Network World, June 20, 1994
"To ensure interoperability between the OSF DCE and
Novell Inc.'s NetWare, IBM is developing products that
link NetWare, including NetWare 4.x, with DCE."
"IBM has stated that DCE is the key technology
underpinning its unification strategy, spanning from
OS/2 to MVS."
- PC Week, June 13, 1994
"Late last week, Digital Equipment Corp. began shipping
the first major non-Unix implementations of the OSF DCE
server components for OpenVMS. . . . Later this summer
it will release DCE client software for DOS, Windows,
and Windows NT. In the fall, Digital will also release
DCE Security and CDS servers on Windows NT."
- Digital News and Review, June 20, 1994
"DCE ...is an important interoperability standard that
we'll support more and more over time.
The pieces of DCE that we're building are exactly those
that we need to support distributed objects on
heterogeneous platforms."
- Mark Ryland, Senior Program Manager, Windows NT
Group, Microsoft, Network World, May 25, 1994
"Why have we been hearing so much about DCE? One reason
is the caliber of players involved. [Digital Equipment
Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., and IBM] now offer products
that support the DCE specification."
- PC Week Special Report, May 23, 1994
"DCE is being readied for prime-time production
applications at some leading-edge sites, and DCE
development is gathering steam... A second wave, with
hundreds more production sites, is expected in the next
12 months. Among those most ready to 'install' DCE
cells are Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, Mead Data
Central in Dayton, and Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New
York."
- ComputerWorld, May 2, 1994
"The great advantage of DCE is [it's] not only an
infrastructure for Unix, it's an infrastructure for any
operating system, mainframes included. That makes it
attractive to everybody."
- Serban Grecenau, Lehman Brothers
ComputerWorld, May 2, 1994
"OSF's Distributed Computing Environment standard makes
distributed computing usable and invisible. . . .
Most of the major players have committed to delivering
DCE in future versions of system and network software.
For example, IBM, which provides a number of AIX-based
DCE products, has broadened its DCE offerings to include
PC LANS. . . .
Because of its ability to enable a manageable,
transparent, and interoperable network of multivendor,
multiplatform systems, DCE could prove to be one of the
most important technologies of the decade."
- Michael D. Millikin, Byte Magazine, Special
Distributed Computing Report, June 1994
Referring to Kerberos, the encrytion-based security
system designed to authenticate users and network
connections:
"Perhaps most significant is the fact that the Open
Software Foundation's DCE standard uses a variant of
Kerberos V5 as the mechanism for user authentication.
Hundreds of vendors have licensed DCE technology, and
many are adding additional security features."
- Russel Kay, Byte Magazine, Special Distributed
Computing Report, June 1994
I-FEST
OSF's I-FEST (Interoperabilty Festival), is a large-
scale multi-vendor environment that allows engineers to
work closely with one another to solve interoperability
issues on a real-time interactive basis. Vendors
execute OSF designated tests in specified OSF DCE
configurations creating environments that resemble end
user scenarios.
Following on the success of OSF's two previous I-FESTs,
OSF is planning an additional I-FEST event for this year
at the OSF facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts from
October 17-28, 1994. In addition to testing and
verifying the interoperability of their DCE
implementation, companies can also participate in the
OSF DCE Certification Program. If you missed the April
event earlier this year, this will be your chance to
certify your DCE Secure Core implementation. OSF will
also be certifying the DFS and GDS components of DCE
during this Fall event.
In order for OSF to plan for this event effectively, OSF
needs to know who will be participating, how many
machines and DCE implementations each company will
bring. If you are interested in this I-FEST event, need
more information, or are planning to register for the
event, please respond to ram@osf.org as soon as possible
with the following information:
Name
Title
Company
Street address
City, State, Zip
Phone and Fax numbers
Please describe briefly the configuration of the systems
(Model, OS, Architecture, OSF DCE Base) you intend to
bring, and your goals for the event. State whether or
not you intend to test or certify your systems, and in
which area: Secure Core, DFS, or GDS.
OSF looks forward to your participation.

OSF Pre-Structured Technology (PST)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Request for OSF Member Participation in CDE/Motif PST
On June 28, OSF distributed a request for member
participation in the formation of the new Common Desktop
Environment/Motif Pre-Structured Technology (PST),
either as a provider of feedback and/or as an End
User Steering committee representative to the project
steering committee.
A number of sponsors are now preparing to use OSF's new
PST process to coordinate the evolution of Motif and the
CDE technologies. The CDE/Motif PST authoring group and
the End User Steering Committee request that you
identify the appropriate contacts in your companies
who may be available for input and review of important
elements of this CDE/Motif project as it is formulated.
It is important to this new process that individuals
within the OSF Membership are identified who can
represent your views from a user and/or developer
perspective in the desktop and user interface toolkit
areas. We plan to begin a series of interactive
discussions on a variety of topics that will help the
project sponsors, the project prime contractor, and OSF
plan the new releases of these important technologies.
We will be including the User Environment Component
(UEC) SIG contacts in these discussions, but we would
also like to expand beyond the SIG to offer as many OSF
members as possible the opportunity to actively
participate in this process.
In addition, we are seeking an end user member
representative for the Project Steering Committee.
Involvement will require weekly conference
calls and occasional travel. This person will work with
the End User Steering Committee in order to provide a
representative view of end user business and technical
requirements. During the PST authoring
phase, this individual will play a key role in
reflecting a user perspective to the authoring group of
sponsors during their data gathering. Later, when the
official Steering Committee is formalized,
the representative will become a regular member of the
committee. Please indicate your interest in the Project
Steering Committee role by sending email to
ted@umich.edu.
Please email your contacts to Lorraine Burrage at
burrage@osf.org or fax them to her at:617-621-0584 as
soon as possible. Please include the following: name,
title, member company, surface mail address, email
address, phone and fax. Also, could you please indicate
areas of interest pertaining to: desktop, technical,
business, user interface toolkit and user/human factors.

DCE Meets the World Wide Web
The Research Institute is beginning a year-long project
to investigate the application of OSF DCE technology to
the World Wide Web. A major goal is to create a secure
Web implementation based on DCE security services. In
particular, the DCE authentication and authorization
mechanisms will be employed to provide fine-grained
access control for hypertext documents. This will make
the World Wide Web a practical means to share and
distribute documents in security-conscious environments.
The project will also demonstrate the use of DCE name
services to provide a flexible location mechanism for
hypertext objects. In the DCE-based Web, hyperlinks
will no longer refer to specific WWW server locations.
As a result, it will be possible to move objects among
servers, and move or add servers, without causing
hyperlinks to become stale.
The DCE-based Web will be a case study for the
application of DCE technology to other internet-based
services. One technique that will be used will be to
tunnel existing protocols through the DCE RPC mechanism.
This object is to gain access to DCE services with
minimal changes to existing software. The project will
develop a toolkit for the application of DCE technology
to other protocols.

OSF Japan Symposium
On June 30th, in Tokyo, OSF held their 6th Annual OSF
Symposium with the theme being, "The New OSF Realizing
the Global Information Infrastructure". There were
approximately 300 people in attendance. Many topics
were covered through presentations. A sampling of
seminar topics and speakers included:
"Role of DCE in a Mainframe Environment"
- Ted Hanss, Chair of the OSF End User Forum
Steering Committee
"Mosaic and the World Wide Web"
- David Black, OSF, Research Institute
"New Network System", a DCE user's presentation
- Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.
Hiroyuki Shibuya, Manager of Network Information
System
- Note: This enterprise is the biggest marine and
fire insurance company in Japan. Their mission
critical OLTP system is based on DCE and Encina
and is one of the biggest OLTP application
systems.
The event also included a DCE Showcase. Nine companies
participated in the showcase and all vendor platforms
ran the Demographic Demonstration Program (DDP). The
companies included: IBM, DCE, Yokogawa Hewlett-Packard,
Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, Sony, Mitsubishi Electric, and
OEC Japan. Fujitsu and NEC demonstrated DCE/DDP for the
first time. The industry press was on hand to view the
Showcase and many Symposium attendees were able to
interact with the DCE companies during session breaks
and at the end of the day.
