Its comforting to know that we aren't the only ones who found the
Cataloging Management Guide a bit obtuse on the subject of importing
bibliographic records.

Subject: Importing records to ADVANCE

The Library
Open Polytechnic of New Zealand

We are planning to import bibliographic records from e-mailed files sent
to us by NZ National Library's bib. utility, NZBN, from diskettes of
exports from NZBN, and from CDMARC Bib. We'll also be using the CD
versions of LCNAMES and LCSUBJECTS for authorities, as these cannot be
supplied by NZBN.

The Cataloguing Management Guide (Release 5.4), Page 4-5, states:

Bibliographic and authority records can be imported into ADVANCE. The
records must be in ... [LCMARC format] ... and must conform to ... ISO
2709 ...

Records can come from a magnetic tape and can be copied into the computer
used by ADVANCE.

ALTERNATIVELY, records can be loaded from a PC file created from an
on-line network, from diskettes or a CD-ROM. In this case, the records
will have to be transferred to a temporary ADVANCE file USING TRANSFER
SOFTWARE WHICH IS NOT PART OF THE STANDARD ADVANCE SYSTEM.

We are trying to find out something about this transfer software. We have
requested this information from Geac. We have been unable so far to get
an answer in New Zealand. Can it be that there is no ADVANCE site
anywhere in the world which uses any one of the three means above? If
there is, we should appreciate hearing about it, as we should like to
purchase this non-standard transfer software. With implementation just
around the corner, you can understand our concern to know the answer.

Does ANYONE know anything about this, please?

Regards,
