NASA celebrates 50 years of orbital flight today! A mere 50 years ago tod=
ay, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth. The US space pro=
gram planted the seed of the amazing technology we enjoy today.
While you may not be expected to know the latest in rocket science, you may=
be expected to know what the next big IT thing will be. Now that you've d=
eployed a wireless network only two years ago and EVERYONE is using it to p=
ower the internets on at least 12 devices per person and MUST have access t=
o streaming video 24/7, are you already planning for the second big deploym=
ent? Or have you decided "the heck with that" and outsourced the internets =
and/or your helpdesks? What are your plans for your aging wired plant? Re=
place it with more wire or go completely wireless? And how are we gonna pa=
y for all of this? What to do...or perhaps what NOT to do.
If you are involved with IT strategic planning of any sort at your institut=
ion, I know you have something to offer us. Please share your crystal ball=
methodology with ResNet members at the 2012 Student Technology Conference =
(STC) at Claremont Colleges.
To submit a proposal for the Strategic Planning theme, go to http://resnets=
ymposium.org/rspm/index/ and sign up and submit a brief description of what=
you'd like to teach us. You don't have to have your presentation ready to=
go, just a brief description will do. The deadline for proposals is March=
1, 2012 at 5 pm (Pacific Time).
