's plans to open LensCrafters outposts in nearly 40 percent of its stores b=
y the end of next year, the department store chain said Tuesday. Macy's Sta=
te Street flagship and Water Tower Place stores, along with stores at Fox V=
alley Mall in Aurora and Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie, are among the 80 =
locations that will set aside space for the eye care and glasses chain by t=
he end of the year. Macy's said it plans to open 200 more in-store LensCraf=
ters in 2017. The four Chicago-area locations will be open by Nov. 4. &quot=
;You can shop, get your eyes checked and get a pair of glasses all in one g=
o," said Macy's spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz. The LensCrafters stores w=
ill have optometrists on-site, as well as high-end frames from designers in=
cluding Ray-Ban, Oakley, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors and Burbe=
rry, Macy's said. Tomorrow will see the arrival of Macy's 88th Thanksgiving=
Parade in New York City, a festive tradition that has spanned almost a cen=
tury. The procession of giant balloons, flutes and performers, culminating =
in the ceremonial appearance of Santa Claus at the end, has drawn millions =
of spectators over the years since it first launched in 1924, and continues=
to be one of the most popular holiday events of the year. In honor of the =
parade's colorful history, Femail takes a look back over some of its best m=
oments from the early 30s and the war-torn 40s, through the Swinging Sixtie=
s, the 90s and beyond. The Macy's Thanksgiving parade first kicked off in 1=
924, with floats and marching employees dressed-to-the-nines in vibrant cos=
tumes. Live animals were also borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, and in a =
spirited crescendo that has endured to this day, Santa Claus closed the par=
ade with an appearance at Herald Square. Balloons first appeared in 1927 to=
replace the zoo animals, designed by marionette puppet master Anthony Fred=
erick Sarg, produced by the Goodyear Tire Company and filled with air. As t=
he balloons gained popularity, helium was used to fill them instead. In 192=
8, all the balloons - including Felix the Cat, the very first - were releas=
ed into the air but unexpectedly burst. Following that, they were redesigne=
d to stay intact, and each had address labels sewn into them so that whoeve=
r found and returned the stray balloons would be rewarded with a Macy's gif=
t.

=20

     <td colspan=3D"2" id=3D"Xuwoj28">

There are many famo=
us traditions synonymous with New York City, and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Pa=
rade is at the top of that list. The first parade marched down Broadway in =
the winter of 1924, and in the years since, it's grown into an event with m=
ore than 3.5 million spectators. The parade is also televised on both NBC a=
nd CBS and boasts a whopping 50 million viewers. And like any long-standing=
NYC institution, the history behind the festivities and larger-than-life b=
alloons is certainly interesting. The 1920s were called â??the boomin=
g '20sâ?=9D for good reason, as it was an era of vaudeville, flappers=
, bootleggers, and excitement. This was also a time of prosperity for the M=
acy's department store, which by 1924 occupied an entire city block stretch=
ing from Broadway and Herald Square to 7th Avenue.

=

     <td colspan=3D"2" id=3D"Auiqwh8buh2gyus">

To account =
for their increase in size, Macy's was also growing their human resources, =
and the majority of employees working for the company were immigrants. Thes=
e newcomers embraced their home and were proud of their new American herita=
ge. They loved the sentiment behind the Thanksgiving holiday, but wanted to=
celebrate with the type of festival their parents had loved in Europe. Wit=
h so much to be thankful for, two weeks before Thanksgiving, Macy's preside=
nt Herbert Strauss announced that the city of New York would be treated to =
a one-of-a-kind holiday event like nothing it had seen before. The first pa=
rade was intended to be a pre-Christmas celebration inviting shoppers to th=
e store for the holiday, but as the tradition grew, the parade's associatio=
n with Christmas quickly fell away. The original parade route started at 14=
5th street and Convent Avenue in Harlem and continued six miles to Herald S=
quare. The parade itself was small, about two blocks, but the route was alm=
ost three times as long as it is today. The boisterous processional include=
d Macy's employees marching to the flagship store, as well as floats, profe=
ssional bands, and live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. The par=
ade was a big success, and within a week, Macy's announced that New York Ci=
ty should set aside the morning of November 25, 1925, because the parade wo=
uld be back next year.

=20
