Subject: locating e-mail addresses
There was a request recently for the e-mail address to GEAC. I realize the
information was to be sent to the person requesting the information but I
wanted to share a search technique I learned recently at a workshop on
locating e-mail addresses.
There is a program called Netfind which will query the network to locate
e-mail addresses. No, it's not perfect and you may get lots of false hits.
But, I have used it several times with success so I will pass it along.
Telnet to bruno.cs.colorado.edu and login as netfind. At the first prompt
type s for search, then type the person's name and the location or name of
the place you think they are located. In the GEAC example, I tried typing
"smith geac canada" and got two general addresses to GEAC.
If you cannot pull up the exact address, it is possible to contact the
postmaster at one of the relevant addresses and request the information
needed. Expect a delay of a day or two although when I tried it the response
time was less than ten minutes.

Before going into Netfind to locate an e-mail address, you may want to
retrieve a list of Internet whois servers which is available through
anonymous FTP. The list was collected and compiled by Matt Power of MIT.
To retrieve, FTP sipb.mit.edu
The file is located in /pub/whoi/whois-servers.list
To use, at your system prompt (if UNIX) type
whois -h server name name of person
ex. whois -h osu.edu vonville
Whois is different depending upon the system you log into. And the current
list of Whois contains about 90 or so addresses (rough estimate). Many are
major universities. But if you know the name of a person at one of the
locations served by direct access to whois, this is a much faster way to get
their address than going through Netfind.
