Several people have contacted me about difficulties with FTPing the
files that I've mentioned I've uploaded to the library-oriented FTP
sites. Sorry about your problems downloading those files. They are
HYPDISS (my dissertation on hypertext which is itself in hypertext
format), DTSEARCH (pretty nice shareware free text indexer), and
LOOKFOR (superfast text/string-scanning for MS-DOS).

Please remember that I said in the postings that **I'm not an FTP
expert,** and can't offer telecom expertise and problem diagnosis. I
just transferred them TO those FTP archives!

But I would recommend you try to get the files from the LIBSOFT ftp
installation at University of Waterloo (Ontario). I know those are
good. Gordon Nickerson there has locally downloaded and checked the
above files for decompressing and program operation. He verifies that
they are indeed good copies. Sorry, but Billy Barron is not able to do
that at his ftp site at Univ. of North Texas.

Gordon says that most difficulty arises from not setting binary mode
when transferring the BINARY files. These are the .ZIP, .EXE, and .COM
files. However, DON'T ftp text files while you are set to binary mode.

You can reach the LIBSOFT archive by ftp-ing to:
   hydra.uwo.ca
...logging on as ANONYMOUS, and changing to the "libsoft" directory.
I have a bit more detailed example or instruction on how to do this in
my original postings on the three filegroups mentioned above.

Gordon also says that he will send people who are having problems some
instructions and an example session, and this usually helps them out.
He is at:
   35007_32@uwovax.uwo.ca

If you continue to have problems getting these files, and still want
them, please send me an SASDM (self-addressed STAMPED diskette &
mailer) in either 3.5" or 5-1/4" format, and I will promptly return to
you. Please check with your friendly local PO and make SURE you put
enough postage on the mailer; I will mail them as received.

cheers,
-ernest perez
