This is a request for assistance in preparing an Email Request Form to
be used in requesting information from various sources via email.
Many of you will remember the efforts Project Gutenberg made to prepare
a summary of the 1990 census in electronic form. (We have just received
national summaries to add to our 51 state (and DC) summaries, and should
present a new version shortly, as soon as the regional summaries will be
decoded by states). This effort was not effective in its first several
attempts, partially due to the difficulties librarians were having in an
effort to extract data from the census CDROM's, and partially due to an
inability to deal with this kind of question via the medium of email.
Thus we are preparing an Email Request Form for information from various
libraries and other institutions.
Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated, and after a few
trial forms have been prepared and tested by Project Gutenberg, we should
have a form ready for more extensive trials in the field.
We realize we are standing in contradistinction to the concept of using
local resources as we are preparing this Email Request Form for 1) those
who either do not have easy access to materials on a local basis, for 2)
those who want information in electronic form, or for 3) those who feel
the networks preclude the concept of local versus long-distance email.
