On the other hand, can they realistically expect to police it? --we could

We have at least one print product in the reference collection of
our law library that has circulation restrictions on it. It is a
sort of economic surveand has been distributed with these restrictions
for many years. Although rare, print licenses are not a totally new
idea.

The Health Sciences Library at ECU has decided that, although we are concerned
about not having this directory in our colletion, the licensing agreement is
unacceptable; we have decided against purchasing the AMA's Directory of
Physicians (formerly American Medical Directory) at this time. We
sometimes allow reference materials out of the library for brief periods of
time, and previous editions of this Directory are in our regular books stacks
for historical purposes. In addition, we are unwilling to assume responsi-
bility for what any patron may use the Directory for.
We are interested in how other libraries are dealing with this agreement, and
encourage others who feel this licensing agreement is unacceptable to decide
against purchasing this Directory.

We might as well go back to the days of chained books. My only question
to publishers might be: "Do you think we are equipped to control what a
patron does with the information received? We are just providers, not
police. It puts libraries and librarians in a very difficult position
of guarding the materials. I have better things to do, like waiting on
patrons. I agree, Charles, what is to stop others from jumping on the
bandwagon?
