CONVERGING TECHNOLOGIES-DIVERGENT APPLICATIONS
THE FUTURE OF INFORMATION SERVICES TO THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY
A Seminar Presentation of the University, College and Research Libraries
Section of the Australian Library and Information Association
Advances in computer networking and the affordable price and ease of use of
desktop workstations has changed the scholarly publication and communication
process forever. The ability to search automatically updated electronic
indexes of documents and then retrieve electronically the full text of the item
within a matter of minutes, no matter where in the world it is held, is now a
reality. Books can now be accessed electronically, modified to suit the
academic program (given appropriate copyright clearances) and printed on
demand. Each of the stakeholders in the academic publication and communication
process : scholars, publishers, computing professionals, academic
administrators and, of course, librarians, will have their own perspective,
their own view of the future of information service provision to the academic
community in this new environment.
The University, College and Research Libraries Section of ALIA will be hosting
a one day seminar to explore some of these perspectives. James Michalko, the
President of the Research Libraries Group (RLG) in the United States and
advocate for capitalising on the new technologies to better support scholarship
and research, will be the keynote speaker. He will be followed by papers from
several publishers currently exploiting the new technologies and from
distinguished academics, each giving their own perspectives on the future of
information services to the academic community. This will be followed by papers
presenting the perspectives of the intermediaries - the librarians and
computing support staff.
This will be a stimulating seminar raising many issues of concern to academics,
administrators, computing professionals and librarians as they work toward an
exciting new technological environment. It will provide an opportunity for
participants to hear from clients and from other stakeholders in the provision
of academic information services. The seminar will be held in Albury on
Sunday, 27th September 1992.
