Cataloging Research and Exchange Programs
at the Library of Congress
Winston Tabb, Associate Librarian for Collections Services at the
Library of Congress, is pleased to announce three new pilot
programs designed to encourage the exploration of new ideas that
could lead to significant improvements in cataloging
productivity, throughput, and quality. The objectives of the
programs are based on the Library's desire to improve its
cataloging operations by engaging in applied research and
staff exchange activities with the library community.
The Cataloger Exchange Program aims to promote the sharing of
knowledge and experience between Library of Congress catalogers
and catalogers at other libraries. The Visiting Researcher in
Cataloging Program will encourage and support research that could
lead to significant improvements in cataloging productivity,
throughput, and quality at the Library of Congress by providing a
suitable setting for applied research in cataloging policy and
practice. The Staff Research in Cataloging Program has as its
primary objective the provision of opportunities for Library of
Congress staff to conduct applied research in cataloging policy
and practice. There are several ways you can become involved in
these important programs:
Apply for consideration as a participant.
Nominate a colleague for consideration as a participant.
Volunteer to host a Library of Congress cataloger at your library.
Cataloger Exchange Program
Program Objectives:
To increase understanding among technical services librarians
of different cataloging operations.
To provide a mechanism for the exploration of new ideas that
could lead to significant improvements in cataloging productivity,
throughput, and quality.
To promote the sharing of knowledge and experience between
Library of Congress catalogers and catalogers at other libraries.
Program Description:
The Cataloger Exchange Program provides the opportunity for two
Library of Congress catalogers to work for three to twelve months
in the cataloging operations at another library. Similarly, two
catalogers from other libraries will have the opportunity to
spend three to twelve months working in the cataloging operations
at the Library of Congress. Each participant will be expected to
prepare a written report describing the experience and to make
recommendations that could result in significant improvements in
cataloging productivity, throughput, and quality.
Application and Selection Process:
Prospective candidates for the program must be nominated by their
library director. Candidates should submit a current resume, the
names of three references, and the dates of their availability
for the program. Additionally candidates must submit a
1,500-word statement outlining their reasons for applying
for the exchange program; the benefits they expect to realize
from the experience; and the contributions they expect to make to
the cataloging operations at the host library. The deadline for
applications is October 1, 1992. Participants will be selected
by a panel of individuals from within and outside the Library of
Congress.
Visiting Researcher in Cataloging Program
Program Objectives:
To encourage and support research that could lead to significant
improvements in cataloging productivity, throughput, and quality
at the Library of Congress.
To provide a suitable setting for applied research in cataloging
policy and practice.
To expose researchers to Library of Congress cataloging operations.
Program Description:
The Visiting Researcher in Cataloging Program provides the
opportunity for two qualified researchers to spend four to six
months conducting applied research in cataloging policy and
practice at the Library of Congress. Researchers will be
expected to communicate regularly with Library of Congress staff
and to publish the research findings.
Application and Selection Process:
Prospective candidates for the program must be nominated by an
appropriate official at their institution. Candidates should
submit a current resume, the names of three references, and a
specific research proposal including a description of the
methodology and the expected duration of the project.
Participants will be selected on the basis of the potential of
the research to result in significant improvements in cataloging
productivity, throughput, and quality at the Library of Congress.
The deadline for applications is October 1, 1992. Selections
will be made by a panel of individuals from within and outside
the Library of Congress.
Program administration:
The programs are scheduled to take place between October 1992 and
September 1993, depending on the needs of the individuals
selected to participate. The programs will be administered under
the Intergovernmental Personnel Act of 1970, as amended.
Compensation:
Participants in both programs will receive travel assistance and
a monthly stipend to compensate for some additional living
expenses. Salaries and benefits must be paid to the participants
by their permanent employer.
