Has anyone had any experience with using a cordless or cellular telephone in
reference services?
We at TWU are thinking about, and have begun, experimenting with the use of a
remote telephone to assist us while we are away from the reference desk with
patrons at CD-ROM workstations or OPAC terminals in need of instruction or
guidance.
Here are some questions that have been raised about the use of such telephones:
1. What advantages and/or disadvantages exist when using
A. a cellular phone?
B. a cordless phone?
Any problems with radio interference from CD-ROM workstations and other
nearby computer terminals?
2. What vendors of phones are being used? Are there advantages/disadvantages
associated with a particular brand/model?
3. How are remote phones being employed in academic library environments? What
have been the results of using a remote phone?
4. Is there any use for a remote headset that allows the hands to be free while
conversing?
Any input, whether a remote phone is being used in your library or not, would
be of great interest to me and my committee. Thank you very much.
