DESCRIPTION: As the personal computer industry enters its second
decade, it is time to ask whether or not these devices are making
life easier or more difficult for the people who use them.
Emerging technologies present librarians with a host of new
problmes, even as they promise to revolutionize the task of
information handling. As information specialists, librarians
will be on the frontline of this emerging technology movement.
Not only must they adapt to these rapid changes in the workplace,
but, in all probability, they will provide the initial exposure
of this new technology to the general public. Topics for
discussion will range from integrating emerging technologies to
computer conferencing and networking, expert systems,
telecommunications, multimedia, electronic publishing and
imaging, and the changing role of librarians.
GUEST SPEAKERS will include an editor from a major computer
publication; a representative from IBM Corporation; the founder
of the Public Access Computer Systems Forum (PACS-L), and the
director of a prominent law library involved with exploring new
technologies.

Presentations will lean heavily toward technological innovation
in the workplace, its impact on services and productivity, and
what librarians can expect to encounter in the future.
