PALINET has a list called Small Packages for Big Jobs that is distributed by ou
r New Jersey Automation Consultant, Kathleen Brannon. It lists PC-based softwar
e packages for libraries--Bib-Base, etc. She also has related materials on soft
ware selection for the novice New Jersey librarian--she might be persuaded to s
end her lists beyond the borders, if you think they would be useful. She's not

There are many options for this kind of system control. Most, if not all,
require use of a network link among all of the machines. I don't use this,
but if you contact USDA Graduate School in DC, or the GSA training staff in
DC, both of these groups use these types of classroom systems. I don't have
a number for GSA, but the Graduate School number would be available from
Norma Harwood (she actually runs the Correspondence Program, but would know
who to contact), her number is 202/720-0626. Call me in Beltsville (number
below) and I will look up a GSA telephone for you, if you like (I'm at home

Subject: NEC Powermate/ Phillips CDD401 compatability?
Here at the University Library we've purchased several NEC Powermate 386/33i
computers which we wish to use as stand-alone CD-ROM workstations with
Phillips CDD401 CD-ROM drives (with CM163 cards). These Phillips drives
and cards work beautifully with our old Epson and Fujitsu AT 286 machines, but
not with the NEC's. However, the NECs will work with the older Phillips CM153
card. Has anyone come across this problem? We'd be grateful for any help or
advice, since our local technical people have been unable to solve the problem.

Subject: Software Solution?
I have been asked to pose this question on behalf of a librarian who called
our office recently. Currently her library has dial access to various datab
ases, including ILLINET Online, the library catalog for which our office
offers user-support. She is anxious to expand this access to one or more
public terminals so that her library patrons can use ILLINET Online on their
own, without Reference Desk mediation.
Does anyone know of any commercially-available software (or alternatively, how
to "fix" software) that would prevent savvy users from plugging in their own
remote access numbers besides the one programmed for use. In this case the
number for ILLINET Online.

I am writing a workbook to teach our readers how to use our
CD-ROM workstations. I would like to use "screenshots" of the
various bits of search software in operation. Does anyone know
of any porgrams that will allow me to take "snapshots" of the
screen at various times and import the results into a word
processed document? Being miserly shareware for preference :-)
