A Plea for Advice....
I've recently graduated from my Master's program at the University of Illinois
at Urbana Champaign and while looking for a permanent position took on an
internship with a local utility company (NOT Commonwealth Edison!). For the
three months that they are privileged with my vast experience [ :)X100 ] they
expect me to creat a corporate library for them, from a mish mash of personal
files, stenographer's idiosyncratic filing systems and miscellaneous
engineering books.
I am basing this technical information center on the creation
of a database that will allow me to track files and materials in the library.
They've given me access to enough funds to buy a decent software package to
do this. I need this software package to:
* Be able to handle seperate filing series
* Login new files or documents
* Index files and documents within files
* Print file folder labels
* Log documents in or out/ circulation
* Find files/documents along the paperwork route
* Include non-paper media (video cassettes, computer files, etc.)
* Perform key word, full text, mulitple field and boolean searches
* Abiltity to define or redefine existing indexed fields
* Help screens
* Product support online or hotline help
* Generate consecutive number series, to be used as accession numbers
* Able to function in a networked environment
Does anybody out there in netland have any suggestions? I am looking at
INMAGIC, Personal Librarian, DbaseIV, PC-File+ and several other packages. Any
other suggestions as to what I should be looking at, or personal experiences
(i.e. caveats or kudos) about the above packages?
