I am doing some legwork for the Portland State University Center for Urban
Studies which is trying to help local social service agencies computerize
and electronically share their information and referral (I & R) directories
and databases. One possibility they are considering is working with local/
regional libraries. There is a project called PORTHOLES afoot here in
Portland to create a virtual regional library.
Existing models for the library's role in human services I&R include
maintaining
print or electronic directories, providing call-in and walk-in service, etc.
The Washington Co. library apparently provides space on its mainframe for local
organizations to maintain a database but does not participate in updating it.
What I am looking for is information on how specific libraries have handled
Community I&R services and examples of Community Information Centers housed in
libraries. I also need some kind of documentation on these services/centers.
Citations for good books, articles, or reports would be appreciated.
Thanks from Portland, OR.
