Coping With the Technological Deluge: The Library Technology Watch
Program
As libraries enter the electronic age, the need for library staff to keep
abreast of current and developing technologies becomes crucial. Our
technical knowledge influences not only our ability to make effective
decisions, but also the quality of service we are able to provide our
patrons. This presenataion details one library's solution to the
problem of keeping librarians and staff abreast of technological change
and trained in areas of current technological use. The Library Technology
Watch Program at UC Berkeley has developed technical expertise in expert
systems and artificial intelligence, hyper- and multi-media, information
transfer, networks and networking, and optical disc technologies. This
expertise is shared with library staff by providing a current awareness
service, regular staff seminars, newsletters and other publications, and
technical expertise to library committees and task groups. This program
is a unique and innovative method to educate and train library staff in
critical areas of current and emerging technologies.
