At the University of Waterloo Library we have not introduced the practice
of allowing patrons to place their own holds through the online catalogue.
We had planned to do so a few years ago but backed off when libraries
which did so reported significant increases in the number of holds placed
but didnUt have space to keep the items.
We've recently learned that in some libraries the surge continued for a
year or so but then levelled off.
We would appreciate hearing about the experiences of libraries which have
introduced patron placed holds so as to have a better sense of what to
anticipate if we go in this direction.
