Subject: How to subscribe to STUMPERS-L
Since I have received several requests from users on PACS-L and LIBREF-L
to forwartd the information I received on subscribing to STUMPERS-L, I am
sending you all the following information:
To subscribe to STUMPERS-L, send a mail message to:
ROSLIBREFRC@CRF.CUIS.EDU
with text to the LISTSERV moderator, Ann Feeny that you would like to
participate on STUMPERS-L, OR
Send a mail message to
MAILSERV@CRF.CUIS.EDU
with the following message text
SUBSCRIBE STUMPERS-L
** Do not include your name after this, as you do on other LISTSERVS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following information was provided to me by the list's moderator:
1) Send questions in the the same address you used to subscribe
(ROSLIBREFRC@CRF.CUIS.EDU), or, if it's easier to remember,
STUMPERS-L@CRF.CUIS.EDU. All messages are actively moderated (i.e.
they don't go out directly--I read them first), so you can send
messages _about_ the list, or susbscription, whatever, to me there.
If you request, when you send your question in, or later, I can run a TSU
on a list of general mailing lists I have, and send you the names of
mailing lists that cover the subject matter of your question, and the name
of the list moderator. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you see what STUMPERS-L
provides first, so as not to "clutter" other lists, as we have the people
who have in a nay volunteered to help you with your search. And if/when
you do choose to post to another list, it's a very good idea to ask the
moderator/listowner if it would be appropriate for you to post your
question.
2) Please send answers directly to the person who posted the message.
3) If you posted a question and got answers, please send a copy back to us
for our files.
4) Rather than ask policy questions of the whole mailing list, I've formed
a "council" for STUMPERS-L, and send any "should I do this differently"
questions to them. Anyone can be on this council, as I WANT all
degrees of library, reference, and internet experience. Just send me
a note, and I'll add you to the list. All I do is send the occasional
note out asking an opinion on something, and if you have an opinion,
send it back.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ON THE COUNCIL TO SEND IN IDEAS, COMMENTS OR ADVICE!
I'm interested in any kind of feedback.
5) Non-stumper questions. This was a recently discussed issue, and the
current solution is this.
The subscribers and users of this list are mostly librarians or
information professionals, but there is always the possibility of a
"general public" user who sends in a question. I personally feel that
_any_ information request should receive an answer, but I recognize that
many subscribers don't want to see the list "cluttered." For this reason,
if a question looks _very_ basic (ie. encyclopedia, almananc, etc), I will
try to answer it myself and send that result to the person who posted. If
that result is not what was wanted (ie. the question was deceptively
clear), I will post the question to the list.
This will probably let a few questions through that you might not consider
a stumper, as I intend to try to err on the side of posting, rather than
not posting. Please bear with any such requests that might come
through--there's always the delete command!
Yours, Ann Feeney, moderator
