DISABILITIES DISCUSSION GROUP SAN FRANCISCO MEETING
The Academic Librarians Assisting the Disabled Discussion Group of
ASCLA/LSSPS will meet at ALA in San Francisco on Monday, June 29,
from 9:30--11:00 in the Hyatt Regency San Francisco--Embarcadero D.
This meeting will be too good to miss! If you can not attend, send
your boss, or your automation librarian, or another colleague.
Featured guest will be Jane Berliss, whose presentation will be
titled "People First!" Topics will include determining the best
strategies for making your particular facility accessible to people
with disabilities and connecting with other local and national
resources. A copy of Ms. Berliss' series of checklists on library
accessibility will be distributed to session participants.
Ms. Berliss is Access Products Director for Berkeley Systems, Inc.,
which manufactures software enabling people with blindness and low
vision to use graphics-based computers. She is also involved in a
variety of organizations relating to computers and/or disabilities,
including Project EASI (Equal Access to Software for Instruction,
of which she is Vice-Chair), the Alliance for Technology Access,
and AHSSPPE (Association of Handicapped Student Service Providers
in Postsecondary Education). Her experience in the area of
adaptive technology has included work for the Trace Center (a
University of Wisconsin-Madison center specializing in research,
development, and information dissemination in the area of computer
access for people with disabilities) as Database Coordinator and
Library/Campus Access Specialist. She holds an A.M.L.S. degree
from the University of Michigan.
I am extremely pleased to have Ms. Berliss as our guest.
