If the point of Ron Doctor's comments is that it is important that
information about finding and using these tools be readily available,
preferrably on a par with other such tools, then I agree strongly.
We would be missing the point of such services if we provided
information about them only through print sources or through online
sources that required some expertise to use.
On the other hand, if Doctor is recommending that we mount the
Barron list, etc. literally, I take exception to this idea. First,
I don't think it is a good idea for these products to be reproduced
hundreds (or thousands) of times. Second, there are tools better
designed as interactive tools (Sonoma's LIBS, UWO's Hytelnet) that
provide the added advantage of actually making the selected connection.
Overall, I think the move for local or CWIS-type finding guides is
towards systems like WAIS, Gopher and Archie, that make the actual
location of the data unimportant. Thus it is possible to make access
to the tools very immediate without actually loading them locally.
