Two New Positions
Feinberg Library, SUNY-Plattsburgh
Reference Librarian: An innovative, dynamic person to share
general duties as part of a six librarian reference
department. Responsibilities include reference desk
services, bibliographic instruction, database searching,
collection development. Some weekend/evening hours.
Reporting to Head of Information & Instructional Services,
position will have special responsibilities for electronic
information resources and technologies, focusing on the
development and technical support of special programs to
instruct faculty/students in the use of automated
information systems available through the campus network.
Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
Relevant reference experience, including knowledge about
emerging electronic information technologies and their use
in support of teaching and research, teaching experience,
database searching skills, effective organization,
interpersonal, communication skills, and technical
competence with relevant hardware and software preferred.
Access Services Librarian: A progressive, service-oriented
librarian interested in expanding document delivery and
interlibrary loan services to the academic community.
Reporting to the Head of Access Services, this position will
have primary responsibility for an active, established ILL
unit, as well as for developing and enhancing current
awareness and document delivery services to faculty, staff,
students. Supervision of three support staff; participation
in reference desk service, collection development,
bibliographic instruction. Qualifications: MLS from an
ALA-accredited school, excellent interpersonal and
communication skills, knowledge of trends in electronic
document delivery and resource sharing, interest and ability
to use emerging technologies to expand/enhance current
methods of delivering information to academic/community
users. Experience in interlibrary loan, supervisory
experience, familiarity with ILL, knowledge of relevant
microcomputer applications preferred.
Salary for both positions is: $25,000 minimum. These are
12-month tenure track positions with faculty rank and

GEORGE M. BEVIER ENGINEERING LIBRARY
The University of Pittsburgh, an AAU institution, is seeking a
librarian with a strong commitment to public services and the
utilization of electronic information access tools to join the
staff of the George M. Bevier Engineering Library.
This position provides an opportunity for a dynamic individual to
learn about resources and research in engineering and technology
while actively participating in enhancing the library's services.
The library is viewed as an integral part of the School of
Engineering's programs. The reference librarian will be expected
to work closely with faculty, undergraduates, and graduate
students in development and provision of library services.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include active, client-centered
service, database searching, bibliographic instruction,
development and management of the reference collection,
evaluation of electronic information resources, and assistance at
a service desk. It is expected that the individual will have a
commitment to service, knowledge of access to information in an
electronic environment, knowledge of online database systems, and
ability to work effectively in team environment. The position
reports to Head, George M. Bevier Engineering Library.
Requirements:
Candidates must possess MLS, MIS or equivalent degree from ALA
accredited library school program. A commitment to providing
effective, quality public service and to learning about resources
in engineering and technology is required. Strong interpersonal,
oral and written communication skills, including flexibility and
commitment to team approach to services are essential. Ability
to work effectively in a dynamic environment and with a diverse
group of users is necessary. Database searching skills and
experience are highly desirable.
Environment:
The George M. Bevier Engineering Library, part of the University
Library System, is located in the Michael L. Benedum Hall of
Engineering on the Oakland campus of the University of
Pittsburgh. Oakland, known as Pittsburgh's Cultural District, is
also home to The Carnegie Institute complex of museums, library,
and music hall, Phipps' Conservatory, Schenley Park, and to
Carnegie-Mellon University. The University Library System is a
member of ARL and CRL and uses the NOTIS Library Management
System.
Salary and rank are dependent on qualifications, minimum
$ 25,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes health care

POSITION: Electronic Services Coordinator
RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinates electronic materials selection, hardware/software
requirements, training; database search support; technical support for CD ROMs.
Coordinates access to remote and university computer center resources, including
electronic journals; and primary source materials on diskettes or tape.
Identifies and develops demonstration projects that use new technologies.
Participates in the development and implementation of access to electronic
information and policies regarding management of software acquired by the
Libraries. Directs the work of one support staff and one FTE student assistant.
Reports to the Head, Networked Services. Works closely with faculty and staff
in Reference, Systems and Collection Development. Library faculty must meet
university requirements for promotion and tenure.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Demonstrated knowledge of
electronic and other library information sources and services; understanding of
the nature of scholarly research and the impact of technology; familiarity with
database searching; experience with computer applications in libraries,
including technical skills related to hardware and software. Demonstrated
analytical, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; creative
ability; tolerance for ambiguity.
Preferred: Several years' experience in an academic library or similar setting;
working knowledge of a variety of microcomputers, microcomputer software, and
applications; familiarity with electronic mail, text datafiles, computer
networking and CD-ROM products.
Tenure-track position. Twenty-four days annual leave, tuition remission, usual
benefits. Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Salary: $30,000 minimum.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
Position: Microcomputer Services Librarian
Available: September 1, 1992
Description: This entry-level position provides reference
and related services, to a varied clientele
of faculty, students, university staff, and
the public in the central library on campus.
This position will have specific responsiblities for the
U-Search CD-ROM service, providing access
to networked CD-ROMs, and for the shared
management of a large Novell network. It is also
responsible for the shared management
of the Machine Readable Data Files Center,
a collection of over 200 databases in
varying electronic formats. The position
presently reports to the Electronic Services
Librarian in the Business Administration/Social Sciences
Reference Department.
The department in now merging with the
Humanities Reference Department, a
reorganization to be completed by January
1993. The position will assist in the merger
process and in the consolidated department,
will participate in general and specialized
reference and instruction in a large
reference department responsible for library
services in the humanities, business, social
sciences; for federal, international and
state documents.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS required, with
experience in microcomputer services
strongly preferred, especially in
regard to local area networks
and machine readable data files.
Experience in providing reference assistance
in a research library and familiarity
with government documents desired.
Flexibility and the ability to work
collegially with good humor in a
changing environment, often under
pressure, are essential. Strong
commitment to public service and to the
profession are expected.
Salary and
Benefits: This is a twelve month academic appointment with a minimum
annual salary of $22,000. Standard State benefits of
annual leave, sick leave, and State or
TIAA-CREF retirement plan.
