The problem is that you are trying to contact the wrong machine. A machine
named consultant.micro.umn.edu is running the unix vt-100 gopher client
software; if you telnet to consultant.micro.umn.edu and log in as "gopher"
(no password) you will have much more fun.
But it is even better (and faster) to run a gopher client on your own local
machine. All sorts of gopher server and client software is available for
anonymous ftp from boombox.micro.umn.edu in the /pub/gopher directory tree.
