Subject: Dow Jones News Retrieval Password Security
I have a question about the password protection on a Dow Jones workstation.
It seems that everytime we think we have successfully disabled anyone from
getting into the files by setting all files read-only and removing edlin and
attrib.exe files from dos that we later discover that patrons can find their
way back into the files and change the password. The communication software
that is being used is SmartcomIII and I don't think that the password can be
hidden using Smartcomm. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to solve this
problem? Input would be appreciated.

Subject: Can Anyone Recommend a Media Booking System?
Any good Media Booking Systems out there?
Mount Royal College library is looking for a booking system for the
Library Media Division to book software, hardware and viewing
rooms.
Our integrated library system, MultiLis does not have such a module
nor are we holding our breath.
We are interested in anything that works, particularly on a VAX
platform, or PC_based. Please include how you came by it
(developed in-house, recommended by, etc.)
We will gladly summarize for the list. Thank you in advance for
your help.

Here in Hong Kong, we have been told by the local Dialog contact that DLINK
does not yet support internet addresses. I cannot recall whether this had
to do with TCP/IP support issues, or with physical hardware addressing,
or both. The rep. felt that a news version, with full Internet support,
would be available in late 92, or early 93. We have no firm information
that this information is correct or mistaken. I would love to hear
from someone who has a copy which works, or has made some back-room
modifications (if that is permitted). Our current communications costs
are generally much higher than our session costs.

Subject: Re: VT100 Terminal Emulation
You will encounter the problem of capturing all the cursor positioning
escape sequences any time the host to which you connect is running a
true full screen application. VT100 is the terminal emulation coin-of-the-
realm for input to any IBM mainframe-type communications controller
(handles the terminal traffic for the mainframe). VT100 is often
converted into IBM 3270 emulation.
The opposite of full screen operations is line-by-line --- e.g., the
scrolling screen type of dialog with a computer system. If the
host to which you connect is line-by-line (e.g., RLIN in dial-up
mode, contrasted with RLIN on a dedicated line), you will be
able to capture the session without any problem.
Hope I've been clear. The VT100 emulation is not the problem. The
problem is the host to which you connect, and whether their
communications controller converts you from line-by-line mode ("TTY")
to full screen mode. An easy example: most NOTIS and INNOVACQ
installations are full screen-based. "DUMB" is essentially
equivalent to TTY mode --- if you can *alternatively* use TTY mode,
then do. But, as you've noticed, not all remote systems that
do VT100-to-IBM3270 conversions have a TTY option as well.
